Aikido & Aiki JujitsuAikido was developed by Morihei Ueshiba as a mixture of his martial arts studies and philosophies of life. Roughly translated Aikido means "the way of unifying with life energy" or "the way of harmonious spirit". The main philosophy in Aikido is to blend with an attacker's force (rather than oppose it) then redirect this force against him. Consequently, very little energy is expelled when defending oneself and there is no concept of "unreasonable force" as the only aggressive force involved is the attacker's. The style aikido derives directly from Ueshiba's studies of Aiki-jujitsu but diverged in the 1920s because of involvement with a religious group. The main difference between Zen Ha Kenpo Jujitsu and Aikido (or Aiki-jujitsu as taught without religious influences), is the concern for the well-being of the attacker. Whereas many jujitsu techniques are designed to cause lasting damage and even death, Aikido techniques all achieve defence with no lasting damage to an aggressor.
